BRIDGING THE GAP

We endorse legislators that are dedicated to our disabled Veterans community by advocating for bills that expand PTSD and combat group therapy services, Veterans Administration Claims Assistance, and better integration into our mainstream workforce.

Senator Chuck Grassley passionately supports our Veterans!

“For years, I have worked across the aisle to help veterans in crisis. During the Bush administration, I helped steer through Congress the Joshua Omvig Suicide Prevention Act with Rep. Leonard Boswell, named after a young Iowa soldier who took his own life days before Christmas in 2005. The Army reservist had returned from combat in Iraq a year earlier and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

This legislation helped launch public awareness about veterans suffering from combat-related anxiety, depression or PTSD and required the VA to develop a comprehensive strategy to help troubled veterans. The law expanded mental health assessments and outreach for veterans and their families and improved research, training and staffing for mental health services for veterans.”

Senator Grassley unequivocally supports members of our Armed Forces who put their lives on the line in service to our country. Our nation owes a debt of gratitude to veterans, and it is the responsibility of the federal government to honor veterans by providing the care and benefits that they have earned. Senator Grassley has conducted oversight on the Department of Veterans Affairs to ensure that they are serving veterans well. He has worked to ensure that the VA was held accountable for the wait list scandal and that veterans have access to private health care providers when the VA can’t meet their needs in a timely manner.

Senator Grassley has also worked to ensure that the sacrifices of veterans will not be forgotten by future generations. He has worked to gather interviews with Iowa veterans for the Library of Congress’s Veterans History Project, making permanent the personal accounts of American war veterans. This will allow future generations to hear directly from veterans so that they may understand the realities of war and the importance of protecting the values of freedom and democracy.
